mysterious fires (or, demon possession) in Italy

Has anyone else heard about these mysterious cases of spontaneous combustion in an Italian village? Apparently, things ranging from microwave ovens to furniture have been bursting into flames for no apparent reason (even after the power had been cut off). There are scientists looking into the matter, but so far have not been able to explain this strange phenomenon…and so others have claimed that it is the work of demons, and suggest an exorcism (which, of course, is always the rational response for any unexplained phenomena!). (Read about it at CNN.com)

  1. I’m inclined to be skeptical, given the date that the article was posted… And although it’s supposedly been going on for months, I’ve found very few mentions of it that predate the April 1st piece. One of those, however, there was a Feb. 17 report that claimed that the problem had been sufficiently explained by scientific means… something to do with geochemical emissions and the town’s proximity to the volcanic Eolie Islands.

  2. Wes,

Really? I hadn’t really done that much research on this (although I did find an article posted a few months ago in a UK online newsite). You may well be right, though, that this has already been explained…although, you’d think that CNN would know that!

  3. Oh, I’m thinking CNN knew (or couldn’t care less about the story to begin with)…but with it being April 1st and all, certain “liberties” are allowed…
